I got the chance to watch the 2nd offering of Repertory Philippines for their 2016 season – Almost, Maine.
In retrospect, Almost, Maine talks about love. In it’s every shade. In all it’s raw glory.
Directed by Bart Guingona, this production is something worth watching. They only use 4 actors to play 18 characters in all 9 acts and used a very raw and simple stage. Everything is so simple. So direct. So straightforward. And yet it’s very complicated.
The script is wonderful. They use all the common connotations about love. So common that we sometimes, didn't realize how direct they could be. How real they are.
This is a story about love. About sadness, joy, regret, triumph. It’s all about finding love and losing love and letting go. I love that the director uses 4 actors to play all the 18 characters and made it more appealing to the audience.
You could hear the audience laughing at the crazy. You could hear us say “ooohhh” and “ahhhh” and “aaaawwww”. This is very engaging. And it would really, really make you look at love in a whole new perspective.
The cast are wonderful. All award-winning. And everyone portrayed all the roles given to them with such great power. Nakakatuwa coz you won’t really recognize them. The way they would switch from one character to another in just a snap is awesome. Galing!!
