Review: Haakaa Breast Pump

Gave birth to my son last February. And while I am so thankful that our company offers 4 months maternity leave, I prepared for my milk stash really early.

I remember struggling with my stash with the #FabSkye. All those difficult days of not being able to pump enough for her to last the day. Literal na isang kahig, isang tuka kami. So with the #GabMazing sabi ko, maaga ako mag iipon and I will really maximize the 4 months ML.

One of the breastfeeding tool I currently love is the Haakaa Breast Pump. I saw it on several celebrity mums and mum friends and I was intrigued. I did a lot of research and asked around. All of them gave me positive feedback and so I went ahead and got myself one even before I gave birth. And boy I'm so glad I did!

Why I love my Haakaa?

Haakaa is meant to be used as a letdown catcher. Meaning, you attached it to your other breast while the baby feeds on the other one. That's also why I used it early. It is advisable to use breast pumps 6 weeks post partum, but Haakaa could be used right after giving birth as a letdown catcher.

It is also easy to use, just place the place over your nipple and apply suction to "attach" the pump on the breast. Easy peasy! That's why I really love it. It's so convenient. I use it almost every feeding para di ako laging naliligo sa breastmilk. You know how it is specially on the early days of breastfeeding? When your breasts are leaking all the time? Haakaa is heaven-sent because I could catch all the letdowns to avoid being soaking wet with milk.

6 weeks post-partum, I started using  it as a breast pump by squeezing the base. It creates that "sucking" motion so I was able to pump out more milk instead of just catching all the let downs.

Another major reason why I love my Haakaa is because it's so easy to clean. No parts. No nooks and crannies. Just one silicon pump. Super easy. Wala ng mas madaling linisin na pump kundi eto.

How to clean Haakaa?

  1. Wash in warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. I use Human Nature Baby Dishwashing liquid.
  2. Sterilize. You could opt to boil it in a pot of water for 2-4 minutes or use your steam sterilizer. You could also pour boiling water on it.
  3. Note that it is not advisable to use strong detergents or soaps. Also use soft bristled brush  or sponges.

Does it produce the same output?

Yes! I must say that with Haakaa, I was able to get almost the same output as my regular breast pump. Though I have to massage my breasts while squeezing the pump if I want to be able to empty my breasts. But it is really super effective if used as letdown catcher or pump while feeding the baby. I noticed that I was able to get more milk if used that way. I would also squeeze the pump from time to time to get more output.

Where to buy?

I got mine from Mothercare. It is also available online thru babymama, Lazada, and Milk and Honey. I also tried checking out Shopee and they have it! Though I'm not sure if it's original so let's just buy from reputable sources, shall we?

Sizes and Accessories

Haakaa comes in 2 sizes - 100ml (4oz) and 150ml (6oz). I got the 100ml and I really think I should've gotten the bigger one. Though you could transfer the milk right away so it's really not an issue. I guess it's also okay that I got the smaller one because it's easier to pack.

They have accessories available for Haakaa like the flower stopper and the silicone cap. Both are meant to cover the pump while not in use. I use the pump cover from my electric breast pump so I didn't bother getting one.

All in all, I am so happy with my Haakaa and I must say that it is one of my best purchase. It really helped me build my stash and I love the convenience.

What about you? Do you have any breastfeeding tools you swear by? Let me know!
